Jessica couldn’t stop it before it came out. “We aren’t married yet, Joe.” She instantly wished she could take it back--it had sounded so matter-of-fact, so cold. She saw him flinch out of the corner of her eye.

“What do you mean?”

“What do you mean, what do I mean?” she asked, forcing her voice to stay calm and even. He didn’t answer. “Obviously we aren’t married yet, unless I missed the wedding and the honeymoon. It’s not a confusing statement.”

“Well,” Joe hesitated. “What are you implying?”
